Microsoft has decided it will sell its Xbox One gaming console without the Kinect accessory starting from June. This will help Microsoft bring the price of the Xbox One down by $100 to $399.99, which would help it compete better with rival Sony’s PlayStation 4, which retails at $399. The Xbox One has been lagging behind Sony s PlayStation 4 in terms of sales since launch, and this massive step is seen as a way to get back into the race. At the time of launch, Microsoft had made it mandatory to buy Kinect by bundling it with the Xbox One. Having said that, Kinect is also one of the key differentiators between the Xbox One and PS4. The Xbox One was launched back in November for $499.99 and just like Sony, Microsoft too managed to sell more than a million consoles on day one. While console sales aren t exactly a problem for the company, it is the rate at which it is selling that is a problem. As of April, Microsoft has sold over five million consoles, which is behind Sony s number of more than seven million PS4 units sold. The PS4 surely has the advantage of being available in more markets, but there is no hiding which console is more popular among gamers.
For many gamers, the budget takes precedence while choosing a console and for this reason Microsoft has unbundled the Xbox One and Kinect and with it slashed the price by $100. While the absence of the Kinect will take away many of the console s Home Entertainment features, the company has said that gamers will be able to buy the peripheral device later this year.
Microsoft has been listening to feedback from gamers and has been flexible in its approach too. It was first reported that the Xbox One would need to be always connected to the Internet, which wasn t received well by gamers. Before it launched the console, it clarified that Internet would only be required when setting up the console. Same goes with the used games policy too, and the company announced that gamers will be able to use old game discs same as Xbox 360.
Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox One will be launched in India sometime in September. It will be interesting to see the price of the console, especially since the PS4 was launched for Rs 39,990. The Japanese company however is struggling to meet the high demand and the console is currently sold out.
