The arrival of the upcoming MIUI 9 has been rumored for quite some time now. Two weeks back, it was confirmed that the MIUI 9 is currently in development, but the release date hasn t been out as yet. An official launch date hasn t been announced but Xiaomi has confirmed that MIUI 9 will arrive very soon. It also assured that the release would happen before August 16 this year. This means that within a month, Xiaomi would be rolling out MIUI 9 which will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat. Posted on the MIUI forum, along with the announcement of MIUI s arrival, the company also clarified on some fake reports circling around it. MIUI s product manager had recently shared screenshots on Weibo related to MIUI. The purpose of sharing screenshots was to seek opinions on MIUI s 9 design and interface. However, the screenshot was wrongly assumed to be MIUI 9 s sample design, when it was simply a theme based on MIUI. The theme, being simple in its design and appeal received criticism of being plain as it was mistaken to be MIUI 9. Xiaomi clarified that this theme isn t the design interface of MIUI 9.
Speaking about the MIUI 9, there are some speculations on what features will arrive with it. Xiaomi s CEO Lei Jun had said that MIUI 9 would be more stable, smooth and powerful. A recent accidental leak to app developers, revealed some possible features on MIUI 9 that include the split screen feature and Android O s Picture-in-Picture mode. Split screen feature had debuted in Android 7.0 Nougat which essentially allows people to use two apps at the same time.
The Picture-in-Picture feature is one of Android O s highlights. This feature is currently available on Android TV with the Nougat update. This feature brings support for multi-display and overlay when launching an activity on a remote display. A progress from Android Nougat s split screen, Picture-in-Picture mode will allow users to watch videos in a small video and work on other apps simultaneously. Screen recording is expected on MIUI 9 as well, a feature which Apple will roll out on iOS 11. Xiaomi is also said to remove the SMS scheduling or Timed Messages feature on MIUI 9 considering the small number of SMS users.
