Users of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro in India may have been slightly disappointed with the fact that the device launched with Android Nougat out-of-the-box. While the phone does run MIUI 9.2, the base operating system is still an older version of Android, despite Android Oreo having rolled out operationally many months ago. The Redmi Note 5 Pro also recently launched in China, but users in Xiaomi’s home country received Android Oreo out-of-the-box on their devices. The China stable ROM can be flashed onto devices sold in India, but this has brought some bugs and is not something we would recommend that users do. However, according to XDA Developers, it’s now possible to flash the MIUI 9 global beta ROM for the Redmi Note 5 Pro on devices in India, which will bring Android Oreo to devices. It’s important to note that the global beta ROM is not available for download through official MIUI or Xiaomi channels just yet. Instead, it’s currently available for download on a website called FunkyHuawei.club, an online service which lets you unbrick, rebrand or update Huawei and Honor devices for a fee.
Naturally, it may not be the most reliable source for Xiaomi-related software, and if you do choose to use the download on that site, we recommend care so as to protect your smartphone. The software is also likely to soon show up through official Xiaomi channels. Additionally, a beta ROM is not as stable as a general release ROM, and may cause certain issues on your smartphone. Users who are not familiar with software modification and ROM loading on smartphones are advised to avoid tampering with their devices so as to protect the device, their purchase and any after-sales support you are entitled to.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is priced from Rs 13,999 in India, and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC. The device comes with a 6-inch full HD+ 18:9 aspect ratio IPS LCD screen, either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat. The phone recently received an OTA software update that enables face unlock on the phone.
