Google has released Android P, the next version of its mobile operating system, in the form of developer preview in March. The developer preview was officially released only for Google’s own Pixel smartphones. Now, Android P has made its way to Motorola Moto Z, which was released two years ago. The update has reached the smartphone through an unofficial port and the ROM is now avaialble to download via XDA Developers. A developer identified by the nickname erfanoabdi on XDA community has extracted the firmware of Android P from a Google Pixel XL smartphone and has then adapted the same for the old Moto Z and has successfully managed to port it. The post at XDA Developers which describes the ROM reveals that the Android P porting works well on Moto Z and it does not have any bug making it suitable for daily use. However, there are quirks with installing the ROM on your primary smartphone. The report notes that the secondary SIM slot still does not work with the unofficial ROM of Android P. It also notes that the stock torch app, encryption and some MotoMods (such as the Moto battery pack) do not work.

The developer is planning to keep supporting the ROM and update it in order to fix these problems. It notes that key features including WiFi, camera, radio and other connectivity modules are working well without any issues.

Since it is an unofficial port of Android P and not authorized by Google, you cannot get the ROM in the form of an over-the-air (OTA) update. In order to install it, Moto Z users will need to unlock the bootloader of their smartphone and you will need to install a custom ROM such as TWRP. After that, you will need to extract the ROM in your internal storage and reboot the device in recovery mode and flash the ROM files.

The process will void the warranty of the smartphone but since it is two years old, most users’ devices will likely be out of warranty by now. We recommend installing the Android P unofficial ROM on the Moto Z only if you understand what you are getting into and are aware of the risk of bricking the smartphone.
