Lenovo-owned Motorola has introduced a new smartphone under its Moto Z series, called the Moto Z Play. Priced at $400 (Rs 26,000 approximately), the Moto Z is the least expensive smartphone in the Z series, which currently also includes the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. The smartphone will initially be available in the US, and is expected to be rolled out in other markets in the coming months. The talking point of the smartphone is its battery life. According to Lenovo, the Moto Z Play offers the longest lasting battery than any of the Moto smartphones launched so far. It comes with a 3,510mAh, which the company claims to deliver 50 hours of back up on mixed usage . It also comes with Motorola s fast charging technology TurboPower, which the company claims can deliver up to nine hours worth of power in 15 minutes of charging. Along with the Moto Z Play smartphone, the company has introduced a Hasselblad True Zoom Moto mod as well, which will be compatible with all the Moto Z smartphones. The Hasselblad True Zoom is similar to the previous Moto mods, and overrides the back of the phone via the 16-pin connector located on the smartphone s back. Since it s photography focused, it brings in a clip-on camera. The Hasselblad True Zoom Moto mod comes with a physical shutter button, grip handle and a 12-megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom, xenon flash, and also an option to shoot images in RAW, making it a point-and-shoot camera. The latest Motorola Mod has been developed in partnership with a Swedish firm Hasselbland, and it will be available for Euro 299 or Rs 22,000 approximately. Moto Z Play specifications
The Moto Z Play has a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED full HD display with 403ppi. The smartphone runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and is powered by Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 3GB LPDDR3 RAM. The smartphone comes with 32GB of onboard storage, and supports additional storage up to whopping 2TB via microSD card.
While the Moto Mod enhances the photography capabilities of the smartphone, the Moto Z Play comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera with laser auto-focus, phase detection auto-focus, f/2.0 aperture,1.3um pixel size and can shoot up to 4K videos at 30fps. For selfie lovers, the smartphone comes with 5-megapixel front-facing camera with 85 degree wide-angle lens and flash.
Connectivity options include dual-SIM (in certain markets), Bluetooth 4.0 LE, Wi-Fi and A-GPS among others. It also comes with USB Type-C port for fast charging. Motorola has included 3.5mm audio port in the Moto Z Play. It may be recalled that the company had skipped 3.5mm audio port in the Moto Z and Moto Z Force smartphones. The smartphone also comes with the fingerprint scanner.
Elaborating on Moto Z Play’s battery feature, first and foremost there is a 3,510mAh unit under the hood, which is marginally bigger than Moto Z Force s 3,500mAh, but significantly bigger than the 2,600mAh on the Moto Z. Motorola claims the Moto Z Play can deliver up to 50 hours of back up on full charge and on mix usage. Though in fine prints, Motorola clarifies that the battery life claims are based on a mixed use profile that includes both usage and standby time under optimal network conditions. And the actual battery life could vary depending on certain factors like signal strength, operating temperatures and other application usage patterns.
