Along with the Moto Z, Lenovo-owned Motorola also launched its affordable semi-modular smartphone, the Moto Z Play. Being a relatively affordable variant, the Moto Z Play comes with toned down specifications and focuses on the battery life aspect. At its price point, the smartphone will compete with the likes of Lenovo s newly launched Z2 Plus, Xiaomi s Mi 5 and OnePlus 3, all of which are powered by slightly superior hardware compared to Moto Z Play. Price and availability: The Moto Z Play will set you back by Rs 24,999 and will be available exclusively on Amazon India and Flipkart starting October 17 at 11:59 PM. The Lenovo Z2 Plus is offered in two variants the 3GB variant is priced at Rs 17,999, whereas the 4GB variant is priced at Rs 19,999, and it can be purchased exclusively from Amazon India. While the OnePlus 3 is available via Amazon India for Rs 27,999, the Xiaomi Mi 5 can be purchased from Mi.com for Rs 22,999. Display: All four smartphones feature full HD (1080p) panels. The Moto Z Play and OnePlus 3 features a 5.5-inch display, the Z2 Plus sports a 5-inch display with 2.5D curved screen, whereas the Mi 5 houses a 5.15-inch with 2.5D glass.
Chipset and RAM: The Moto Z Play is powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor (eight Cortex A53 cores) clocked at 2GHz paired with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 506GPU. Rest of the smartphones are powered by Qualcomm s Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset (four custom kryo cores), paired with Adreno 530 GPU. OnePlus 3 is equipped with larger 6GB of RAM, the Mi 5 comes with 3GB of RAM, whereas the Lenovo Z2 Plus sports is offered in 3GB or 4GB of RAM variant.
Storage: The Moto Z Play is equipped with 32GB of onboard storage along with a microSD card for further expansion up to 2TB. The Z2 Plus is offered in 32GB and 64GB storage variants, OnePlus 3 is offered in 64GB variant, whereas the Mi 5 is offered in 32GB storage. Cameras: Motorola has equipped the Moto Z Play with a capable 16-megapixel sensor of aperture f/2.0, LED flash and PDAF. It also includes support for 4K video recording and slow motion HD video recording at 240fps. It also features a 5-megapixel front facing camera with LED flash for selfies and video recording. The Z2 Plus, on the other hand, is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.2 with PDAF, LED flash and electronic image stabilization (EIS). Support for 4K video recording, time-lapse videos and HD slow motion videos at 120fps is also present.
The OnePlus 3 and Mi 5 feature 16-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, and 4K video recording capabilities. Mi 5 also includes 4-axis OIS to let you capture blur free photos. Battery and connectivity: To keep things ticking, the Moto Z Play comes with a 3,510mAh battery with support for Motorola s fast charging technology TurboPower. The company also claims that just 15 minutes of charging can offer up to nine hours of usage. While the Lenovo Z2 is armed with a 3,500mAh battery, the OnePlus 3 and Mi 5 are both armed with a 3,000mAh battery. All smartphones feature Quick Charge 3.0 support for fast charging.
In terms of connectivity, all smartphones include dual SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE support, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. For charging and data transfer, all four smartphones feature USB Type-C connector.
Operating system: All four smartphones boot to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. While Motorola s user interface is closer to stock Android, OnePlus 3 runs on Android Marshmallow-based OxygenOS 3, Mi 5 runs on Android Marshmallow-based MIUI 8, whereas Z2 Plus comes with Android Marshmallow with Lenovo s custom UI.
Modular Functionality: One of the features where Moto Z Play shines in front of its competitors is the semi-modular functionality using Moto Mods. In simpler words, Moto Mods are basically modular plates that you can snap on the back of the Moto Z Play. There is a 16 pin connector that allows the Mods and the smartphone to interact with each other. Some of the Moto Mods unveiled by Lenovo include InstaShare mod (which is an add-on projector), Hasselblad True Zoom camera mod with optical zoom and Xenon flash, JBL s SoundBoost add on speakers, and Power Pack to add extra battery.
