Motorola smartphones come with native support for face unlock feature, which can be used to unlock the device simply by looking at it. Now, the company has released a companion app in the Play Store for its smartphones that already support face unlock.
The app will allow Motorola to update the pre-loaded face unlock features on its smartphones without the need to update the entire operating system. This is part of Google’s vision for a modular Android operating system where components can be individually updated without the need to update the entire system software. The first version of the application available on the Google Play Store does not bring any new features.
The new Moto Face Unlock app is compatible with devices such as the Moto G6, Moto Z3 Play and Moto Z3. Motorola notes that older models with face unlock feature like the Moto X4 use a different mechanism not related to this app. The face unlock feature on Motorola smartphones can be found under “Security and Location” in settings.
Like the feature found on most Chinese smartphones, Motorola’s face unlock also works by relying on the front-facing camera. The process involves framing your face in the preview window and the phone will learn attributes of your face to recognize you the next time.

The Play Store listing states that the update brings “Performance improvements and minor bug fixes.” With the updated application, Motorola users can expect to see some bump in the speed of face unlock on their smartphone. However, the change in performance of face unlock feature won’t be that huge.
