Lenovo-owned Motorola has started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update for Moto Z Play smartphone in India. The Moto Z Play is the first mid-range modular smartphone from the company and it was launched way back in October 2016. The smartphone was launched with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and it received Android 7.0 Nougat update in February last year.

Motorola released Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for Moto Z Play in August and now after almost six months, the company has released the Android 8.0 Oreo update in India. The update carries the build number OPN27.76-12-22 and the update weighs more than 1GB in download size. Motorola has not shared the changelog for this update just yet but it should bring features like notification channels, notification dots, picture-in-picture mode, autofill and smart text selection.

The update also brings Android security update for the month of April and it is dated April 1, 2018. The update tool mentions that users should update their devices over a stable Wi-Fi connection. The update is being rolled out in the form of an over-the-air (OTA) update and should be available to all Moto Z Play users in the coming weeks. However, those not interested in waiting for the update notification can head over to Settings >> System Updates menu and manually check if the Oreo update has arrived for you.

To recall, Moto Z Play was first announced in September 2016 as a modular smartphone for the mid-range market. It features a 5.5-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 403ppi. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage and support for expandable storage up to 256GB.

It sports a 16-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED flash. There is also a 5-megapixel secondary camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording. It features a front-mounted fingerprint sensor and is backed by a 3,510mAh battery. With Oreo update, the smartphone has received two major updates, which is commendable considering most premium devices don’t get major updates. Android Oreo released in August last year is currently powering less than 5 percent of active Android smartphones.
