Moto Z3, the new flagship smartphone from the Lenovo-owned Motorola is now official. The Chicago-based smartphone maker launched the device at an event in its backyard early this morning and the most interesting part here is that Motorola is still trying to convince people that modular smartphones make sense. Google, which had a greater ambition for modular phones and LG, which tried modular phones once, have both given up on the idea.

The Moto Z3 comes weeks after the launch of Moto Z3 Play and it basically clubs modern design with decent, but outdated processor into a package that does not cost a lot of money. The Moto Z3, of course, supports MotoMods, which makes it a lot easier to customize and comes with one new mod that will leapfrog the device into the world of modern communication in 2019.

Moto Z3 Specifications

Moto Z3 features a 6-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and sports an 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chipset, which might seem outdated in front of newer Snapdragon 845 but offers performance that is worthy of being billed as flagship. Motorola has equipped the Moto Z3 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

On the camera front, the Moto Z3 features dual rear camera setup comprising of a 12-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 sensor and 1.25 micron pixel size and a secondary monochrome camera along with dual-LED flash. There is an 8-megapixel image sensor at the front for selfies with 1.12 micron pixels and 84-degree field of view. One of the unique elements of the Moto Z3 is that it has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and most people claim that it works surprisingly well.

Moto Z3 is splash resistant and has power button on the left side. The smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo and employs a near stock version with gesture support similar to that upcoming Android P. Moto Z3 packs a 3,000mAh battery and the company plans to offer the smartphone in Ceramic Black version and will be exclusive to Verizon.

Moto Z3 Price, Availability and 5G MotoMod

The Moto Z3 is priced at $480 without contract and will be available with 24 monthly installments starting at $20 a month. The pricing does seem reasonable for a smartphone with one year old processor. Alongside the Moto Z3, Motorola has also launched the 5G MotoMod that will transition the device to faster data network when Verizon starts 5G service in select states in the US next year.

The 5G MotoMod packs Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 modem for 5G networks. It will not only offer faster network speeds and also packs an extra 2,000mAh battery to keep you going for few more hours. There is no word on pricing but will go on sale once US carriers begin 5G roll out. As part of the announcement, Motorola is offering MotoMod that is over $100 for just $50 as a limited time offer.
