Motorola launched its flagship Moto Z3 smartphone in Chicago last week. The new Moto Z3 is technically the first smartphone to support 5G via a dedicated MotoMod when the network goes live sometime next year. The Moto Z3 follows the launch of Moto Z3 Play, a cheaper model in Lenovo-owned company’s modular smartphone series.
While Motorola is known to launch a number of devices in its Z series catering to different price segment, the same will not be applicable this year. The Chicago-based smartphone maker has confirmed that it will not launch any new smartphone in the Moto Z series this year. The confirmation came in reply to a question about the launch of Moto Z3 Force on Twitter.
Hi. We will not be launching any more moto z’s this year.

If Motorola’s performance in the past one year is to be looked at then this does not seem much of a surprise. The first generation of Moto Z had three models: the standard Moto Z, the Moto Z Play and the Moto Z Force. With the release of second generation Moto Z series, the company dropped the standard model and offered only the Moto Z2 Play and Moto Z2 Force.
A fan asked on Twitter whether there would be a Moto Z3 Force later this year and Motorola was quick to reply that it will “not be launching any more moto z’s this year.” The reply from Motorola confirms that Moto Z3 series will only include the Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play for 2018. It is surprising that the series, which Motorola started amidst a lot of fanfare is losing its momentum.
Motorola has had a relatively quiet year so far and its budget smartphones, the Moto G and Moto E series, have failed to win accolades from critics and consumers. In a recent interview, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing told media that the company has not done enough with Motorola and accepted that its products have been behind in terms of development against other Chinese smartphone makers.

Motorola was once one of the leading smartphone brand in India but has bowed out of the top five due to better products from rivals like Xiaomi, Samsung and Honor. While Motorola has been bold enough to answer that it is not launching a new Moto Z smartphone this year, the bigger question will be whether it has the pedigree to stay relevant and offer competitive products in this over crowded and extemely competitive smartphone market.
