Motorola is set to revamp its smartphone lineup this year, and might have shelved plans to launch new models in the Moto C, Moto M and Moto X series. The Lenovo-owned company is reportedly planning to introduce record number of models in the Moto G series next year as it aims to improve its smartphone portfolio. Ken Wong, President of Lenovo Asia Pacific, recently told BGR India that Motorola’s smartphone lineup will be simplified going forward. Now, popular tipster Evan Blass has tweeted that the company will introduce at least four new models in the Moto G series next year. Blass claims that Motorola plans to accompany the standard variant of Moto G series smartphone with three more models, which could be called Play, Plus and Power. The Moto G series made its first debut when Motorola revamped its product portfolio in 2013. The company introduced Moto X lineup as new flagship device followed by first Moto G smartphone in 2013. The Moto G series, which started as one model a year, expanded to include new models named Turbo, Play and Plus with the launch of third generation Moto G3 in 2015.
At IFA 2018 in Berlin in August, Motorola introduced two new smartphones – the Motorola One and Motorola One Power – as first Android One devices developed in partnership with Google. With Motorola One series, the company is basically launching competitor to Motorola Moto G6 smartphones, which failed to catch up with devices from Chinese smartphone makers.
“Our strategy in the smartphone business is to make sure we continue to excel in the country where we have good momentum,” Wong told BGR India. “We also plan to have much simpler product portfolio going forward but the focus will be on specific needs of consumers. Smartphone market around the world is very competitive and it is rather difficult to make money and with Motorola, we are looking at right cost structure to make sure that we stay competitive,” he added.

With the revamped smartphone lineup, Motorola might have a better product strategy for the years ahead. However, it will need to offer better specifications at a competitive price to be even considered as a rival in the segment.
