While most of the country is served by BSNL, the two biggest cities in the country – Mumbai and Delhi – don’t have BSNL services. Instead, they are served by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), also a government-owned operator. And like BSNL, MTNL too offers mobile operator services, but only to customers residing in Mumbai and Delhi.

The company has now launched its latest prepaid plan as it hopes to offer similar value to the BSNL plans available in the rest of India. The new STV 98 (Special Tariff Voucher) plan is priced at Rs 98, and gives MTNL prepaid customers 28 days of validity, with unlimited voice calling, 2GB of data, and 100 SMS. The plan is already active in Mumbai and Delhi, TelecomTalk reports.

There are however some conditions to the plan benefits. Free calling is only available for local calls when in the home network, while roaming charges will apply for calls made when roaming. STD calls will also require a separate balance top-up. Furthermore, MTNL and BSNL do not offer 4G connectivity, with services limited to the 2G and 3G spectrum bands. Therefore, browsing speeds will be significantly slower when using mobile data.

As such, better value is on offer if you subscribe to either Airtel or Jio, which also offer similarly priced plans. Jio has an entry-level Rs 98 plan, which offers free unlimited calls for 28 days across to all operators across the country, along with 2GB of 4G data (unlimited after exhaustion of 2GB with speed throttled) and 300 SMS.

Interestingly, the DoT recently approved BSNL’s proposal to start offering 4G services, and similar approval could be given to MTNL as well. If this goes through, MTNL users in Mumbai and Delhi will also have access to high-speed internet services soon.
