Mumbai local train service is indeed the city’s lifeline. It’s what connects Mumbai’s wide geography making it possible for people to commute at affordable prices. Mumbai local is the most used transportation service in the city and things may soon get better for daily commuters. Western Railways is said to introduce a new system wherein commuters will get to check the live status and position of the local trains. This system would be available on Google Maps.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the Western Railway authorities in Mumbai have devised a plan to implement this new system. They plan to install GPS systems in the motormen’s cabins of the local trains in Mumbai. These GPS systems would be connected with Google Maps through which commuters will be able to check real-time information on the trains. The Western Railways authorities plan to approach Google so that the GPS systems can be linked to Google Maps. Additionally, the authorities are also trying to set up servers which would determine the real-time position of trains. BGR India reached out to Google, and a spokesperson commented saying, “We are always exploring opportunities and partnerships to make Google Maps even better for our users.”
The decision to introduce this new system came after the authorities started receiving continuous complaints from the commuters’ associations requesting for a system which provides real-time information on local trains. The Western Railways already have a smartphone app called ‘Disha’ which provides information on the timings of each train and which platforms it would be arriving on and at what time. Disha is however an offline app and therefore fails to provide real-time information in case there are any changes. The m-Indicator app is also very helpful in providing information on local trains in Mumbai. The app also has an online chat group where commuters across the city update each other on the trains. While the app does its job of providing the latest updates to users on the arrival of trains and their respective platforms, real-time information is still not achievable. For such a system to launch would be a big boon for daily commuters and it will hopefully help people avoid the mad rush in Mumbai locals.
