The short video app Muscial.ly was acquired by a Chinese company called ByteDance last year for a whopping $1 billion. While no changes were made to the app then, ByteDance has now decided to merge the short video app with its own popular app TikTok. Existing Musical.ly users are currently being transported to their new TikTok accounts in a new app that features a slightly different interface, but still offers the same set of core features.
ByteDance is merging the two apps in order to get a wider set of users in one place. According to TNW, Musical.ly currently has about 100 million active users, while TikTok has 500 million users. Merging with Musical.ly also gives TikTok access to the US market. The rebranded app is said to bring in a new feed with access to videos from more number of countries. Video recommendations are also expected to be more personalized now.
The app also comes with new reactions for videos and even some filters, that will further help expand the style of videos found on the platform. A new alert notification is also being added, which will show up if you use the app for more than two hours without a break.

While the app is the same, it’s still too early to say if users really like the rebranded version of Musical.ly. The changes seem to be too sudden, but the new features might help retain most of its community. On top of that, the huge amount of content coming from TikTok should also attract more users. The new TikTok app is available for download on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Let us know if you like the new interface in the comments below.
