The Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018) is just a few weeks away and a trove of information about upcoming devices is being leaked online. The latest to add to the list are the alleged renders of Asus Zenfone 5. Fresh details about the next-in-line flagship smartphone have shown up in the manufacturer’s manual. Based on a leaked manual on WinFuture, the Asus Zenfone 5 could be internally referred to as X00PD. The image hints at a dual-camera setup which is positioned vertically. Even as the smartphone appears to carry an 18:9 tall display, the top and bottom bezels appear thick, which means it might not actually be a truly bezel-less phone. If past rumors are anything to go by, the Zenfone 5 is likely to be crafted as an alminium unibody phone with a 5.7-inch 18:9 display. Under the hood, it is expected to run the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC paired with 3GB of RAM. Given the tall display, it is likely to pack a higher battery.
According to the leaked manual, the smartphone appears to feature a microUSB port and not a type-C port. There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The lack of a newer chipset, Type-C port, and presence of the standard authentication sensor suggests the phone might be an entry-level or mid-range smartphone. Other rumored specifications for the Zenfone 5 include Android 8.0 Oreo running out-of-the-box, and dual-SIM support.
Last week, Asus sent out press invites for an event on February 27 at the MWC 2018, with the hashtag #BackTo5 and the tagline “We love photo”, suggesting the upcoming devices will be camera-focused. While the invite does not reveal much, from the presence of Snapdragon branding alongside the Asus logo, one can assume the upcoming smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm chipsets.
Past rumors further indicate that the company will be launching not just one model but the whole Zenfone 5 series as is its tradition. In separate leaks, an Asus smartphone with model number ASUS_X00QD was certified by Wi-Fi Alliance with dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac support. It is expected to be called the Zenfone 5 Max running Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box. A third smartphone, with model number ZC600KL received certification in Russia. It is likely to flaunt a 6-inch 18:9 display along with a Snapdragon SoC under the hood.
