To recall, HMD Global made a big global debut at MWC 2017 last year. The company showed how it plans to bring the DNA of Nokia phones to Android and it’s ambition to become an important player in the smartphone segment. It launched Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 3310 feature phone at MWC last year. But the company started selling it’s smartphones globally only in the second half of 2017. Since then, HMD Global is off to a great start and Counterpoint Research claims that the Finnish startup sold more phones than OnePlus, HTC and LG in the fourth quarter of 2017, to capture 1 percent market share. Last year, the secret ingredient was nostalgia but this year, it must bring something more to the table. The announcements this year will set the path for actual revival of Nokia in the smartphone space.
Nokia at MWC 2018: How to watch the event
HMD Global will take stage to launch new phones few hours before Samsung Galaxy S9 launch. It is a smart move since it will ensure that it’s announcements are not overshadowed by that of Samsung.
HMD Global’s event is scheduled to start at 4PM local time in Barcelona. In India, the event will start at 8.30PM and Nokia fans can watch it live without the need for a physical presence. HMD Global says it will livestream the event on Nokia Mobile Facebook page and will always be available at Nokia.com/phones.
Nokia at MWC 2018: What to expect
HMD Global is expected to announce Nokia 1, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8 Pro/Nokia 9 in addition to global edition of Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 3310 4G.
Nokia 1 and Nokia 7 Plus are expected to be the most important announcements since they will be company s first devices to be based on Android Oreo (Go edition) and Android One platforms. HMD Global already offers near stock experience on its phones and has even released Oreo update for most of its devices and by supporting Android Go and Android One program, the company wants to show it’s support to Google and Android.
Google has already confirmed that Android Oreo (Go edition) and Android One devices will take centre stage at MWC 2018. HMD Global’s Nokia 1 could become the first phone to launch with Oreo (Go edition). Evan Blass has already revealed the press render of Nokia 1. It is expected to feature a 4.5-inch HD display, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage and 4G LTE.
Nokia 7 Plus is expected to be the first smartphone from HMD Global to feature 18:9 display. The leaks so far suggest it will be an updated version of Nokia 7 with faster Snapdragon 660 chipset and taller 6-inch Full HD+ display. It will run Android Oreo out of the box and Blass claims it’ll be an Android One device.
Other details include up to 6GB of RAM, 64GB storage, dual rear camera with Zeiss optics and a 16-megapixel front camera for selfies. It will have a rear mounted fingerprint sensor and could be priced around Rs 30,000.
HMD Global is also expected to announce a flagship smartphone at MWC 2018, which could be an updated variant of Nokia 8. The name of this device remains a mystery with some claiming it to be Nokia 8 Pro/Nokia 8 sirocco while initially it was rumoured to arrive as Nokia 9. The only major change between Nokia 8 and this updated model will be the 18:9 display and jump to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
It is expected to use the same Snapdragon 835 chipset, Zeiss-based dual rear camera, Bothie mode among other features. Apart from these three product announcements, HMD Global will also announce global availability of Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 3310 4G variant.
The most crucial factor for HMD Global will be when these devices become available in the market. Last year, the company announced the devices at MWC and they went on sale only in June-July. With smartphones getting outdated within months of their release, it will be interesting to see HMD Global’s go to market strategy. Stay tuned with BGR India, we will have more updates on new Nokia phones.
