The two major selling points of the new iPhone X is the edge-to-edge OLED display that offers better contrast, improved brightness and deeper blacks. The second major feature is the new facial recognition feature called Face ID that users dedicated sensors to capture mathematical model of an user’s face. While Face ID is a feature with mixed response, the one clear winner is the new OLED panel that was once seen only on Samsung’s flagship Galaxy smartphone. According to a new report, Sony is trying to source the same high-quality OLED panels for its upcoming flagship. Business Korea reports that the Japanese smartphone maker is procuring OLED panels for its smartphones from LG display division. It needs to be noted that Samsung is the sole supplier for OLED panels used on iPhone X while LG’s P-OLED screens can be found on company’s V30 smartphone and Google Pixel 2 XL.

“We know that Sony is working with flexible OLEDs,” one insider familiar with the development was quoted as saying.

LG is the official supplier for OLED panels used on Sony TV range. With Apple adopting OLED panel for its flagship, it is out of question for any smartphone maker to not consider the display technology for their flagship devices. Sony is expected to procure the smartphone-sized OLED panels from LG and then calibrate them for its own design to offer an experience in line with that of rivals like iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8.

According to rumors, the Xperia XZ Pro is expected to sport a 5.7-inch OLED display with 4K UHD resolution and support for 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage. The smartphone is also likely to feature dual rear camera setup with a combination of 18-megapixel and 12-megapixel image sensors. A leak claimed that the smartphone will be priced at 5,999 Yuan (approximately Rs 60,000) when it goes on sale in China and will pack a 3,420mAh battery.

Sony has lost its sheen among peers like Apple and Samsung in the race for best flagship smartphone. But its CEO Kaz Hirai recently said that the company is not withdrawing from the smartphone segment and will continue to sell Xperia-branded smartphones. Hirai believes that staying in the smartphone space is necessary to understand the future trend of consumer mobile device.
