Xiaomi has already confirmed its presence at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. While the Chinese smartphone maker did not make a major announce last year, it did launch the Mi 5 flagship at MWC in 2016. This led to speculation that Xiaomi will take advantage of the largest mobile gathering to launch Mi 7. However, new reports claim that Xiaomi will not launch the Mi 7 at the event next month. Android Headlines reports citing a high-ranking company official that the company will not make any major announcements at MWC next month. The information comes in the wake of an insider tip claiming that Xiaomi plans to launch Mi MIX 2S, an upgraded version of Mi MIX 2 ahead of MWC. The lack of major announcements could mean that Xiaomi will not launch Mi 7 or Mi Max 3 smartphones but it could rather showcase the new Surge S2, a chipset developed in-house by the company. It is definitely not easy to paint a clear picture of what Xiaomi plans to unveil at MWC. But the company does have a strong list of products lined up for this year.
Xiaomi’s decision to not launch Mi 7 at MWC could well be influenced by the likes of LG, HTC and Huawei. The three smartphone makers have decided to not showcase their next-generation flagships – G7, U12 and P11 respectively – at the event next month. It is believed that these companies are avoiding a clash with Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, which are likely to hog the limelight at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona.
Apart from Galaxy S9, Sony is expected to launch its first bezel-less device in the form of Xperia XZ Pro while HMD Global is likely to bring a huge product lineup including flagship Nokia 9 and patented Zeiss technology called mobile multi-lens solution. There is a possibility that an announcement at MWC could mean that the product gets drowned among those other top product launches.
In terms of features, the Mi 7 is expected to feature a bezel-less design like Mi MIX and house the Snapdragon 845 chipset. It is expected to have 8GB of RAM and a 5.65-inch Full HD+ display. There are rumors of the Mi 7 launching with a Plus model that could get a larger 6.01-inch OLED display. Other rumors include a 16-megapixel dual rear cameras and a premium price over its predecessor.
