Roaming charges on any network across the country will now be significantly lowered by up to 57 percent than before with effect from July 1. By ruling out the long time debated One Nation-Free Roaming which was proposed in the NTP 2012, the Telecom Regulatory Authority in India (TRAI) has directed all the operators to slash the tariffs on incoming as well as outgoing calls, as well as SMS charges while on roaming. According to TRAI s directives, the operators have been asked to introduce customized schemes which will lower the call tariffs on roaming through STV or combo vouchers. While on roaming, the local outgoing call tariffs have now been locked at Rs 1 per minute instead of the Rs 1.40 per minute earlier. Similarly, on outgoing STD calls while on roaming, the tariffs have been lowered from Rs 2.40 per minute to Rs 1.50 per minute. Also, now users will be charged Rs 0.75 per minute instead of Rs 1.75 for incoming calls on roaming.
Apart from this, incoming SMSs will remain free of charge like earlier, the roaming charges on SMS have now been capped at Rs 1.00 per SMS sent in local zones or Rs 1.50 per SMS on STD.
With the roaming charges being lowered, operators might chose to increase the tariffs on local calls in order to compensate the revenue loss.
