New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has come up with a new way to facilitate easy payment of utility bills for consumers. The civic body has launched ‘smiley fridge magnets’ with unique QR codes, which consumers can scan via their smartphones for making instant payment of water and electricity bills. For the same, the civic body has collaborated with Axis Bank and SignCatch, a Delhi-based retail tech startup.
According to a report by Times of India, New Delhi Municipal Council will be distributing a total of 25,000 these fridge magnets to its water and electricity consumers. “The consumers can stick these magnets on their refrigerators at home and scan the QR codes to pay their bills instantly,” an NDMC official was quoted as saying by the report.
When scanned via a compatible smartphone app, the QR codes embedded in the fridge magnets will redirect consumers to their most-recent outstanding bill, with an option to pay using any of the digital payment methods supported by New Delhi Municipal Council, added the official.

While the initiative is definitely good, it doesn’t exactly change the digital payment process. Essentially, the fridge magnets allow the extra step of having to navigating to NDMC’s website to be skipped, directly allowing consumers to proceed to the payment interface. Nonetheless, it’ll help in making the overall bill payment process smoother and more convenient.
