Netflix had been testing the 30-second video previews on iOS since March, but in a very close knit group. And now the company has come out and said that the feature is going live for all users on iOS in its new blog post. The trailers will appear like Instagram or Snapchat Stories do and users will be able to click on the circular thumbnails on the main app screen. The trailers have been optimized to play back vertically on iOS devices.
Netflix talked about the release on its own blogpost saying, “Today, we are excited to introduce mobile previews (launching today on iOS and coming soon to Android) to the mobile experience. Mobile previews present members with a fun, simple, and easy way to learn about all the new content on Netflix — and find something great to watch even faster.
Years of testing has made it clear that video previews help our members browse less and discover new content more quickly. With the launch of mobile previews, we are bringing a video browse experience to your mobile phone in a fun and mobile-optimized way.”
The iOS video previews will work just like the desktop ones do and users will be able to tap play or add to their list. Users will also be able to swipe or tap the screen to advance to the next preview.
Netflix introduced video previews to its TV apps and web services last year. Though according to its own data, the company says that around 20 percent of its viewers are on mobile devices. This makes previews an important feature for the company and we can expect the company to add it to its Android app soon.
