After months of rumors and speculations, Netflix has finally launched the ability to download shows or movies and then watch it offline later. Once you have updated to the latest Netflix app on Android or iOS, you will see a download button on selected shows and movies. For this new feature to work, you need a device running on at least iOS 8.0 or Android 4.4.2. Once updated, you will see a new category in the Netflix menu, called ‘Available for Download’. Tap on the button to see a list of titles that can be downloaded and watched later. Netflix says the download option is restricted to a few shows and movies, but we are seeing most of the famous ones like Stranger Things, The Crown, Narcos, Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad and movies like Pulp Fiction, Nightcrawler, Good Will Hunting, and Hot Fuzz among others. After zeroing in on what you want to download and watch, select the title, and on the description page you will now see a download icon. For TV shows, Netflix is letting users download individual episodes as well. All the downloaded content will be available on the ‘My Downloads’ section in the app. Unlike YouTube, there are no restrictions on how long a downloaded video will be accessible, and you simply need to delete the content once you are done watching it.
The impressive bit about this new feature is that it also lets you select the quality (standard or higher) of the video you want to download. So if you have a high-speed Wi-Fi connection at home or office, you can easily download the HD version of the episode of movie. Needless to say, higher quality will require more storage and time to download. To tweak the quality of the video, head over to App Settings -> Downloads -> Video Quality, and then select between standard or higher.
The offline viewing feature is a boon for users in countries like India where mobile data is expensive and speeds are highly inconsistent or while traveling when you might not have any data connection while in the flight or elsewhere. In these scenarios, it really helps that you can now download episodes or a movie using the broadband connection at home or office. It is a welcome feature, especially after Netflix executives had previously said the company was unlikely to introduce such a feature.
In an interview, the company s director of technology said that this kind of a feature is never going to happen as it would only be a short term fix for a bigger problem . However, CEO Reed Hastings later did hint at an alternative approach when he said that Netflix needs to keep an open mind about the feature. But the feature is here, and best of all, it doesn’t require any additional subscription fee.
