A new Google Maps app for Android has popped up on the Google Play store, which features a brand new user interface that takes some cues from the Google Maps app on iOS. This was first spotted by Android Police and it now appears that Google pulled the update from the Play Store. Android Police also notes that the updated app will probably only work on devices running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and it has managed to download the .apk file. Going by the design of the app, we believe that this could possibly be the same app that Google demoed at Google I/O back in May. According to the screenshots we can notice that the menu button has been shifted to the left, and there is even a new card called “faster route now available”.
According to the Google Play What’s new screenshot, the update includes – Enhanced navigation including live traffic updates, incident reports and dynamic rerouting and a new feature called explore. There also seems to be a new tablet specific application that is tailor made for bigger screen sizes.
