The camera on an iPhone has always been known for its great capabilities. But Apple isn t settling yet. According to the long time Apple commentator John Gruber, the company is working on major camera improvements. He says that iPhone s rear camera could come with two-lens system, which would allow them to work together and take great quality images. The specific thing I heard is that next year s camera might be the biggest camera jump ever. I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery, said Gruber in his weekly podcast. Apple s two-camera lens system sounds somewhat similar to the Duo Lens camera on the HTC One (M8). In HTC s case, the second camera lens is for adding depth of field to a photo. If Gruber s comments are true, it will be interesting how Apple implements this two-camera lens setup, as well as who supplies these lenses to Apple. The company has used lenses from Sony for its cameras. The Japanese tech giant yesterday announced a new 21-megapixel camera Exmor RS IMX230, which is capable of taking 4K HDR video. But if Apple wants the dual-lens system, it could partner with Corephotonics.
With the iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple didn t announce any major hardware improvements to the camera that it had launched with last year s flagship. The company did say that it had designed the image signal processor with Focus Pixels. But now it seems the company has big plans for the next iPhone.
