Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P hands-on and first impressions: Google hits the sweet spot

google-nexus-5x-hands-on (1)

After the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 failed to meet expectations, it appeared Google s stint with Nexus series will turn out to be another debacle as its Android One series. But evidently Google hasn t given up and has launched two new Nexus phones. Be it design, specifications (including latest features such as the USB Type C and fingerprint reader), price or availability, Google is leaving no stone unturned to ensure success of its new Nexus series. We managed to briefly use the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P at the launch event in Delhi today, and here s our first impressions: Also Read - Google doubles production for Pixel 6 series, orders over 5 million units of Pixel 5A: Report

Quick specs: Dimensions 147.0 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm Weight: 136 grams, Display 5.2″ Corning Gorilla Glass 3, Battery 2700 mAh Battery, USB Type-C for fast charging, Camera Rear: 12.3 MP2; 1.55 m; f/2.0, Front: 5 MP, Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 1.8 GHz hexa-core 64-bit Adreno 418 GPU

LG has returned to the Nexus franchise with the Nexus 5X. It may be recalled that the LG-made Nexus 4 was considered one of the best value for money devices at its time. Though competition has intensified since 2012 and the market is flooded with competitive high specced budget and mid-range smartphones. However, the Nexus 5X looks a promising device coupled with an impressive form factor.

Speaking of the design and overall look, the Nexus 5X measures 147.0 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm and weighs about 136 grams. Though not the slimmest smartphone in the market right now, the 5X feels very compact, light and sturdy. Moreover, it has a metal frame and plastic rear. The front has display, front camera and speaker grilles, the rear has the camera (slightly bulged out) and flash. You can see Nexus and LG brading on the back. Overall, we were impressed with the design of the Nexus 5X. We hope our impressions remain the same during our detailed review that will follow very soon.

During our brief time with the device, the stock UI on the Nexus 5X, as we had expected, felt smooth and feature-rich. The performance seemed to be okay while both front and rear cameras did deliver decent quality given indoor dim light conditions at the launch event. We are looking forward to test its other interesting features such as USB Type C, Nexus Imprint and Android Sensor among others. Stay tuned for our detailed review of the device for more insight on the performance, user experience and longevity.

Nexus 6P

Quick Specs: Dimensions 159.3 x 77.8 x 7.3mm Weight 178 grams, Display 5.7″ Corning Gorilla Glass 4, Battery 3450 mAh Battery USB Type-C for fast charging. Camera, Rear: 12.3 MP2; 1.55 m; f/2.0, Front: 8 MP, Processor Qualcomm Snapdrago 810 v2.1, 2.0 GHz octa-core 64-bit, Adreno 430 GPU

After having tied up with the likes of LG and Motorola, Google s decision to choose Huawei was rather interesting. Huawei, though an old player in the industry, hasn t had many disruptive products. With Honor series, however, Huawei has gradually started to grow in markets such as India. The Nexus 6P is perhaps one of the best devices made by Huawei so far.

The Nexus 6P has metallic body and like the 6X impressed us with its premium-like build quality — compact, light and sturdy. While the stock UI is smooth and fast, the device looked very promising on the performance front. Cameras, both front and rear, performed decently in the given lighting conditions. Stay tuned for more detailed analysis on the camera, build quality and overall performance of the smartphone.

Looking at the features, software enhancement and more importantly design changes, Google s new Nexus phones definitely look better proposition than the predecessors. Tie up with e-commerce platforms as well as offline stores, Google is also ensuring wider availability of its smartphones in the country.

As we mentioned earlier, the Indian smartphone market has grown highly competitive with plenty of high specced devices, especially in the budget and under Rs. 25,000 segments, have flooded the market. The LG Nexus 5X is priced at Rs 31,990 for the 16GB variant, and Rs 35,990 for the 32GB variant. The Huawei Nexus 6P, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 39,999 for the 32GB variant, and Rs 42,999 for the 64GB variant.

While the Nexus smartphones look pricey as compared to the available Android phones, but if the phones are really good, we don t think it will be a hurdle. In fact, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X look like an immediate threat to the flagship premium phones from the likes of Sony and Samsung.

Stay tuned for our detailed analysis and review of the new smartphones.
