Canon is said to be working to integrate fingerprint sensors with its cameras and lenses but Nikon might have an even better idea. The Japanese multinational is developing biometric sensors for cameras and lenses that can detect biological information as well as your mood when shooting a photo. The patent (JP2017-143581) for the technology was first discovered by New Camera, which details company’s plan. It describes Nikon planning to build sensors into the sides of lenses and the front and back of the camera body. The sensors are meant to read your thumb and fingers on both hands while shooting. The filing indicates Nikon plans to detect things like heart rate, blood flow, blood pressure, perspiration, body temperature and even how hard you are gripping the camera via dedicated pressure monitor. Nikon further describers that photographers tend to feel strong emotions while capturing photos but these feelings are not always conveyed through the photos themselves. It notes that viewers may be able to appreciate photos more if they knew the photographer’s state of mind at the time of exposure. The data collected by these biometric sensors could add a layer of depth to the photographs depending upon the state of emotion.
In a way, Nikon might be planning to bring machine learning and artificial intelligence to photography with these biometric sensors. Using the detect biometric data, the camera can use algorithms to interpret the emotion of the photographer. The camera manufacturer might be planning to label photos with things like “normal,” “joy,” “love,” “shame,” “pain,” “impatience,” “confused,” “surprised,” “indifferent,” “anger,” “sadness,” and “despair.”

The patent file does not detail when Nikon plans to debut this technology on its cameras and lenses. Perhaps, it could be an effort to modernize cameras with technologies that are found on modern imaging devices like smartphone camera. With the new technology, we might soon be able to see emotions of photographer recorded in the EXIF data of photographs.
