We’ve all been conveniently calling OnePlus’ next smartphone the OnePlus 6 for some time now, without actually knowing for sure if that’s what the company will call it. Indeed, all this time, the Chinese smartphone maker never officially called it that. However, we finally have what we can consider a confirmation of the name. A short four-second teaser video posted by OnePlus on its social channels including Facebook and Twitter, confirms that the next OnePlus smartphone will in fact be called the OnePlus 6. The caption with the tweet below mentions the number six, and the video ends with the number six being shown on screen. The short video doesn’t reveal much else, with only a single phrase being shown among graphics the speed you need. This could be a hint that the OnePlus 6 will tout itself as a performance-centric smartphone, just as the company has done with its devices in the past as well. OnePlus, since the OnePlus One, has stuck to top-end Qualcomm chipsets for its devices, and also regularly offered more RAM than most of its competitors. The current flagship device, the OnePlus 5T, comes with up to 8GB of RAM, while most flagship Android smartphones today stick to between 4GB and 6GB of RAM options.
All of its phones (with the exception of the mid-range OnePlus X) have sported the best available Qualcomm mobile chipset of the time, with the OnePlus One sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 and 3GB of RAM, the OnePlus 2 coming with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 and 4GB of RAM, the OnePlus 3 featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC with 6GB of RAM, the OnePlus 3T sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC, and the OnePlus 5 and 5T powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with up to 8GB of RAM.
There have been many rumors floating around as we get closer to the launch of the OnePlus 6. The latest reports indicate that the phone will be launched at the end of April, which will be much sooner than the end of May or early June timeline that we were expecting based on past launches by OnePlus. The phone is likely to feature a large 6.3-inch 19:9 aspect ratio screen, and will run Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.
