Towards the end of last year, we came across reports about HMD Global working on an ultra-affordable device, dubbed Nokia 1. This upcoming smartphone is also expected to run Google s Android Oreo (Go Edition). While there is yet to be any official word on a launch date, we may have our first look at the device. A user has shared two alleged photos of the Nokia 1 on Baidu (via GSMArena), which show the device s back panels. Interestingly, there s one major difference between the two photos. While the overall design is the same, the camera module in one photo seems covered in polycarbonate. In the second photo, the module is covered with glass. It is unclear why there are two design variants of the same alleged phone. What s clear though is that the upcoming smartphone will come with a single-lens camera setup not surprising since it will be an entry-level device.
The leak doesn t really reveal much else. But based on what we have come across before, the Nokia 1 is expected to run Android Oreo (Go Edition). Android Go is essentially an important part of Google s aim to connect the next billion Indians. Android Oreo (Go Edition) is optimized to work with smartphones featuring ultra low-level specifications.
Previous leaks suggest that the Nokia 1 will feature an HD IPS-LCD display, either a Qualcomm or a MediaTek SoC under the hood, and 1GB of RAM. There will also be 8GB internal storage. One leak suggested that the Nokia 1 will launch in Russia with a price tag of RUB 5,999 (Rs 6,500 approximately).
Considering the core objective of Android Go edition, this seems to be priced a tad higher. There are high chances that the smartphone will be more affordable in the Indian market. While there is no official word yet, HMD Global is widely expected to take the wraps off the Nokia 1 at MWC 2018 in Barcelona next month.
