According to Android security bulletin, the security patch dated February 1 fixes seven known issues while the security patch dated February 5 brings fix to 19 issues. The most critical of them is the severe vulnerability discovered with the media framework that can potentially let attackers to execute arbitrary code on an affected device by transmitting a specially “crafted file”.
Google says there are no reports of any Android device being affected by the vulnerability just yet. The February security update was first released for Google’s own Pixel and Nexus-branded devices early this month. The search giant also released factory images and OTA update file for those planning a clean install of the update.
Apart from Pixel and Nexus devices, the February security patch was only available on Nokia 8 and Nokia 3 with Nokia 2 joining the list with this update. HMD Global, the new home of Nokia-branded smartphones, has been rather consistent when it comes to releasing software and security update for its devices.
The Finnish startup has already released Android 8.0 Oreo update for its flagship Nokia 8 and mid-range Nokia 5, Nokia 6, Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 smartphones. It is expected to soon begin testing Oreo beta for Nokia 3 smartphone while it has confirmed that Nokia 2 will get the new version with Android Oreo (Go edition) optimizations.
HMD Global is estimated to have captured one percent of the smartphone market share globally at the end of fourth quarter of 2017. The Finnish company started selling its smartphones globally only in the second half of 2017. Counterpoint Research states the company shipped around 8.7 million smartphones last year and is poised to grow bigger in 2018.
