HMD Global, the new parent of the Nokia brand, has launched the 4G variant of the Nokia 3310 feature phone in China. As rumored, the device comes with YunOS, a forked version of Android developed by Chinese tech giant Alibaba. The ‘smart’ feature phone has been listed on the company’s official website but there is no word yet on pricing or availability. HMD Global resurrected the Nokia 3310 feature phone at Mobile World Congress last year. At the time of launch, it only supported the 2G network and the Finnish company followed up with a 3G variant in the second half of 2017. Now we have a 4G variant, which makes the feature phone compatible with modern telecommunication networks. If the device were to launch in India, it would be compatible with the 4G-only network of Reliance Jio. Also Read - Samsung Galaxy A02 specifications spotted online
In terms of features, the Nokia 3310 4G variant features a 2.4-inch display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It has 512MB internal storage and supports up to 64GB via expandable storage slot. It packs a 1,200mAh battery that Nokia claims can deliver up to 12 days of standby usage on 4G. It also comes with a 2-megapixel primary camera along with LED flash.
HMD Global has partnered with China Mobile for 4G service on Nokia 3310 and the smart feature phone comes with WiFi and support for hotspot functionality. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0 and micro-USB port for data transfer and charging. It supports FM Radio, includes a 3.5mm audio jack and has a single SIM slot.
The Nokia 3310 launched last year runs on the Symbian 30 platform and it is not clear how much of a difference the switch to YunOS will make. The YunOS is designed by tweaking the Android source code available as part of Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Alibaba claims that its forked version has an install base of over 157 million users. The 4G feature phone was previously spotted with model number TA-1077 and had also received TENAA certification.
The 4G smart feature phone is expected to be officially launched at Mobile World Congress next month. The pricing and retail availability of the device should be revealed at that time. There is no word on when the device will become available in India and whether it will run YunOS in the country.
