HMD Global, the new home of Nokia mobile brand, resurrected the acclaimed Nokia 3310 feature phone early this year. Now the Finnish startup seems to be adding 4G connectivity and a modern operating system to the feature phone.

An updated version of Nokia 3310 with model number Nokia TA-1077 has received certification from TENAA, China’s Telecom Regulatory. The listing shows the features of the upcoming feature phone along with images. The next iteration 3310 seems to have same design like the one launched at Mobile World Congress in February this year.

The listing reveals that next version of Nokia 3310 is running YunOS, an Android-based operating from China’s Alibaba. YunOS, also known as Aliyun OS is a forked version of Android that offers Alibaba-powered cloud-based email and navigation features but is limited in terms of overall functionality due to restricted Google Play services. However, the switch from Symbian 30 system to YunOS means the next generation of Nokia 3310 will be a smart feature phone.

Apart from YunOS, the Nokia 3310 also gets 4G support, which will make it work on modern telecom networks including Jio’s 4G only network in India. The TENAA listing does not reveal specifications of the device but it is mostly likely to have features similar to existing model.

Last week, Counterpoint Research data revealed that HMD Global shipped 13.5 million feature phones and 2.8 million smartphones during the third quarter of 2017. The shipment numbers make HMD Global the third largest feature phone brand, which should be encouraging for a brand that started operations just early this year.

In terms of worldwide smartphone sales, HMD Global is ranked sixteenth but has seen shipments also double in comparison to first half of this year. IDC estimates the company to have shipped only 1.5 million smartphones in the first half of 2017.

HMD Global currently sells Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 smartphones based on Android operating system. Its product range also includes feature phones like Nokia 3310, Nokia 150 and Nokia 105. The company is expected to introduce updated versions of all these devices next year.
