Contrary to the promised availability of Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 in July, HMD Global has now revealed that the smartphones will not be available for purchase in India until mid-August. The company launched the Nokia-branded Android smartphones last month, following the launch of the Nokia 3310 redux and the Nokia 3. While these have been available both at the offline retail stores and online channels, the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 appear to be a distant dream for fans at the moment. In a statement to BGR India, a HMD Global spokesperson said, We are humbled by the response to Nokia 3. Currently, we are ramping up our production for Nokia 3 on priority to meet the existing consumer demand. In the coming week, we will start production of Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 to get them ready for sales start by mid-August. While the company did not reveal a specific date, some reports claim that the company has tentative plans to begin the sales of Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 in the country on Independence Day — August 15. Priced at Rs 12,899, the Nokia 5 went up for pre-booking in the last week, and it is exclusive to the offline market. The Nokia 6, priced at Rs 14,99, is exclusive to Amazon India and will be up for registrations starting July 14. Even as the pre-bookings and registrations have begun, Nokia 3 will continue to remain the company’s current focus based on the fresh statement. Nokia 3, priced at Rs 9,499, is the cheapest of the trio, and has been available at retail stores and online stores as well. Given the pricing, undoubtedly the Nokia 3 is serving as the hot favorite for consumers and the company alike. However, it is an entry-level smartphone, and faces competition from the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Lenovo K6 Power.
Talking about the specifications, the Nokia 5 is equipped with a 5.2-inch HD display and is powered by an octa-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera along with an 8-megapixel front camera. Fuelling the smartphone is a 3,000mAh battery. It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box. The Nokia 6, on the other hand, is equipped with a 5.5-inch full HD display and is powered by a 1.1GHz octa-core processor paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It further packs 16-megapixel rear camera along with an 8-megapixel front camera. It is also fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery. On the software front, it runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.
HMD Global, which aims to resurrect the brand value Nokia once enjoyed in India, is also leveraging the government’s Make in India policy. At the launch event of the new Nokia smartphones, the company announced that going forward, all Nokia-branded smartphones sold in India will be domestically manufactured.
