Nokia 6.1 First Impressions: It’s what’s on the inside that matters

The Nokia 6.1 brings nifty upgrades over its predecessor, the Nokia 6, that was launched towards the end of 2016.

nokia 6 2018 lead

Highlights

  • The Nokia 6.1 is priced at Rs 18,999.

  • It is available online via Amazon India, and offline retailers.

  • The Nokia 6.1 runs stock Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Nokia 6 marked the Finnish giant s grand comeback with an Android smartphone towards the end of 2016. While it was first limited to the China market, HMD Global later announced that it would make the Nokia 6 available globally. Priced under Rs 15,000 in India, the smartphone featured good design and build, but the specifications weren t good enough to match the competitors. Also, the overall experience was fairly decent. HMD Global wants to change that with the Nokia 6.1, which was announced at MWC 2018. It comes with improved hardware under the hood. Priced at Rs 18,999, the new Nokia 6.1 (or Nokia 2018) is expensive by Rs 4,000 compared to the Nokia 6 that was priced at Rs 14,999. It is available to purchase from Amazon India, as well as other offline retail outlets. At its price point, the smartphone competes with the likes of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Oppo s Realme 1, all of which are priced relatively lower, and come with their own USPs. I spent some time with the Nokia 6.1, and here are my first impressions. Also Read - Nokia C1 Plus coming soon: Here are all leaked specifications

Watch: Nokia 7 Plus First Look

A design you expect from Nokia

As soon as you hold the Nokia 6.1 in your hands, you can instantly feel the premium design, and how well the smartphone is built. It is sturdy, and features a unibody metal design. The front is dominated by a 5.5-inch full HD display with the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. Nokia is not following the current trend with tall displays, and you have to contend with thick bezels along the top and bottom.

The sides have chamfered edges with golden accents, adding to its premium look and feel. But the golden accents can also be seen around the camera module at the back, the fingerprint sensor located just below it, and also the volume buttons.

Big changes over Nokia 6

Being a successor, there are few key changes in the new Nokia 6.1. To begin with, you now get a better Snapdragon 630 SoC compared to the Snapdragon 430 SoC on the Nokia 6. The new smartphone also comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage, compared to 3GB RAM and 32GB storage.

Another big change is that the 16-megapixel rear camera now comes with Carl ZEISS optics to help you capture clearer and sharper photos. While the Nokia 6 came with a microUSB port for charging and data transfer, the new smartphone comes with a reversible USB Type-C port. And lastly, the Nokia 6.1 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box with Android One program, and support for Project Treble to enable faster software updates.

For the brief time that I used the smartphone, I did not come across any issues or lag. Having stock Android without any bloatware is a big advantage. The camera app on the Nokia 6.1 is custom made, and not the one that Google ships. It comes with bothie feature where you can use both the front and rear cameras at the same time to click photos or record videos.

Initial impressions

No doubt, the stock Android experience on the Nokia phones make them more desirable over devices with heavy custom UIs on them. Also, Nokia has a good reputation when it comes to rolling out timely software updates. However, the competitors that are priced less, offer more in terms of specifications.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes with a massive battery, dual cameras, face unlock feature and stock Android, while still priced relatively lower. The Redmi Note 5 Pro also comes with dual cameras, face unlock and some AI chops. The Realme 1, on the other hand, comes with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, and is still priced Rs 5,000 less. With this tough competition, it remains to be seen how well the Nokia 6.1 fares. We will soon come out with our detailed review, so, stay tuned.
