HMD Global has, since it began operations, promised to prioritize software on its Nokia devices. Running Android, the company has had all of its recent launches on the Android One program, which offers stock Android software and a presumably superior update schedule. Furthermore, the company also promised that all of its Android devices would be updated to Android 9 Pie. The Nokia 6.1 Plus, launched recently, is the company’s second device to receive Android 9 Pie, although it’s currently only available in beta.

After the wider general roll-out of Android 9 Pie on the Nokia 7 Plus, the Nokia 6.1 Plus is the second phone from the company to get the new software version, just about two months after Android 9 Pie was announced and rolled out for the Google Pixel series. However, for the time being, it isn’t a general release; users on the Nokia 6.1 Plus can sign up for the beta program and receive an early version of the software. While beta versions are largely usable, they aren’t as stable as general release versions and may toss up minor issues every now and then. Therefore, beta software isn’t recommended for novice users.

How do I install Android 9 Pie Beta on my Nokia 6.1 Plus?

If you own a Nokia 6.1 Plus and want to get onto the Android 9 Pie Beta program, visit nokia.com/en_int/phones/betalabs and register for the program. Once you’ve completely the registration steps and entered your phone’s IMEI number, you’ll receive a prompt on your phone to download the latest Android beta version, which will replace the stable software on your phone.

Currently, not a lot of smartphones run Android 9 Pie, with the latest distribution numbers still not registering the latest version of Google’s operating system. Apart from the Google Pixel range – the older Pixel 1 and 2, as well as the newly-launched Pixel 3 series – OnePlus and Nokia are the first manufacturers to bring their devices onto the current version. The Nokia 6.1 Plus is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, and is priced at Rs 15,999 for the single variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The phone sports a notched display and glass back.
