HMD Global has launched Nokia 6.1 Plus with a notched display in India. The smartphone will be available starting August 30 exclusively on Flipkart. With the Nokia 6.1 Plus, the Finnish company is challenging the Xiaomi Mi A2 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 in India.
With India’s smartphone market growing in double digits and most consumers picking devices in the sub-Rs 20,000 price segment, HMD Global’s Nokia 6.1 Plus will have some tough competition up its sleeve. One of the immediate competitor for the smartphone will be the Oppo F9, which was also launched today at an event in Mumbai. It also sports a glass back with aurora finish that changes color from red from purple. Here is a look at how Nokia 6.1 Plus compares with Oppo F9, Xiaomi Mi A2 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1:
Design and Display
Nokia 6.1 Plus and Oppo F9 have an edge over Xiaomi Mi A2 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 when it comes to design. The Nokia 6.1 Plus features metal casing with glass on the front as well as rear. The Oppo F9, on the other hand, also features glass back and metal casing, but it does offer aurora finish that makes it look different to all other smartphones in this price segment.
The Oppo F9’s aurora finish back has a reddish hue on top, and purple color towards the bottom. It looks much better than the aluminum unibody design seen on the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, and Xiaomi Mi A2. The Mi A2, in particular, has a design already seen on other Xiaomi smartphones like the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi Y2.
Nokia 6.1 Plus comes with a 5.8-inch LCD display with a Full HD+ resolution of 2280×1080 pixels. The notch allows for a taller 19:9 aspect ratio, and the smartphone has a tiny chin at the bottom. The Oppo F9, on the other hand, has a waterdrop-style notch, which is basically a small cut-out for the front camera. It also has a taller 6.3-inch display with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels, and 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
Xiaomi Mi A2 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 have thin bezel design, but the bezels are bigger than the ones seen on Oppo F9 and Nokia 6.1 Plus. They feature a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels, and 18:9 aspect ratio.
Nokia 6.1 Plus and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 are both powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core chipset, while the Xiaomi Mi A2 is using more powerful Snapdragon 660 SoC. The Oppo F9 is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 chipset, which is a chip used on entry-level and mid-range smartphones.
Nokia 6.1 Plus is being offered only in one storage option with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 can be purchased with 3GB or 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB internal storage. The Mi A2 is currently available with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, but the company will soon offer a variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.
Xiaomi Mi A2 and Nokia 6.1 Plus run Android 8.1 Oreo, and are Android One certified, which means these devices will be the first to get Android Pie update. Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Oppo F9 also run Android 8.1 Oreo, but there is no word on when they will receive the latest Android update.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus features dual rear camera setup with a combination of 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors while Xiaomi Mi A2 uses a combination of 12-megapixel and 20-megapixel image sensors.
Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 uses a combination of 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear camera setup on the 3GB and 4GB RAM variants while the 6GB RAM variant uses a high resolution 16-megapixel main sensor paired with a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. Oppo F9 comes with a combination of 16-megapixel and 2-megapixel dual rear camera setup.
Nokia 6.1 Plus offers a 16-megapixel selfie shooter while Mi A2 has a 20-megapixel selfie camera. Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has an 8-megapixel camera at the front while the Oppo F9 comes with a 16-megapixel selfie camera.
HMD Global is undercutting others by pricing the Nokia 6.1 Plus competitively. The smartphone is priced at Rs 15,999, which makes it cheaper than rival Xiaomi Mi A2 and Oppo F9. However, it is more expensive than Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, which starts at Rs 10,999, and tops at Rs 14,999.
Xiaomi Mi A2 is priced at Rs 16,999, which is a grand more than the Nokia 6.1 Plus, while Oppo F9 is priced at Rs 19,990.
