As expected, HMD Global has launched the refreshed Nokia 6 (2018) smartphone at an event in China. The new smartphone comes with improved hardware and design compared to its predecessor. One of the evident changes comes in Nokia 6 (2018) comes in the form of on-screen Android navigation buttons instead of capacitive keys last year’s Nokia 6.
Nokia has also moved the fingerprint sensor from the front to the back, just below the camera module. However, unlike other manufacturers, Nokia hasn’t switched to 18:9 display, instead, it is still using a display with 16:9 aspect ratio. At its price point, the Nokia 6 (2018) will compete with the likes of Xiaomi Mi A1 and Honor 7X. We pitted all three smartphones based on their price, specifications and features, and here’s how they fare.
Price and Availability
The Nokia 6 (2018) will be offered in two variants – 32GB storage for RMB 1,499 (approximately Rs 14,600), and 64GB storage for RMB 1,699 (approximately Rs 16,600). However, there is no word on when the smartphone will be launched in India.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 is priced at Rs 13,999, and can be purchased via Flipkart, mi.com/in and Xiaomi’s offline retail partners. The Honor 7X, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 12,999 for 32GB storage variant, and Rs 15,999 for the 64GB storage variant.
Display, Hardware and OS
The Nokia 6 (2018) and Xiaomi Mi A1, both feature a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) display with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The Honor 7X, on the other hand, features a 5.93-inch full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Under the hood, the Nokia 6 (2018) is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB / 64GB storage options.
The Mi A1 from Xiaomi is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB onboard storage. The Honor 7X is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 659 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB / 64GB storage. All three smartphones feature microSD card slot for further expansion is also present.
In the software department, Nokia 6 (2018) runs on Stock Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS and an update for Android 8.0 Oreo is expected soon. Xiaomi’s Mi A1 runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS with Android One flavor on top, whereas Honor 7X runs on Android 7.0 Nougat-based EMUI 5.1 OS.
While the Mi A1 and Honor 7X feature dual-camera setup at the back, Nokia 6 (2018) only comes with a single camera setup. HMD Global has gone with a 16-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.0 with dual LED flash, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Nokia has also included its ‘Bothie’ feature that allows users to click photos and record videos using the front and rear cameras simultaneously.
The Mi A1 comes with a pair of 12-megapixel cameras at the back – one is a wide-angle sensor and other is a telephoto lens that supports 2X optical zoom and portrait mode for DSLR-like photos with bokeh effects. Up front, you get a 5-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.
The Honor 7X, on the other hand, also comes dual-camera setup having a combination of 16-megapixel and 2-megapixel sensors. The secondary sensor records depth information to add Bokeh effects to your photos. Up front, the smartphone comes with an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calling.
Battery and Connectivity
The Nokia 6 (2018) is armed with 3,000mAh battery with support for fast charging, the Mi A1 comes with a 3,080mAh battery, whereas the Honor 7X is armed with a slightly larger 3,340mAh battery. In terms of connectivity, the Nokia 6 (2018) and Honor 7X comes with a microUSB port, whereas the Mi A1 comes with USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer.
Other connectivity options such as Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE with VoLTE and dual-SIM card support are common on all three smartphones.
