HMD Global launched the first Nokia branded smartphone this January, called the Nokia 6. The smartphone launched as a China exclusive device, following which the global version was unveiled at the MWC 2017 expo along with the Nokia 3, 5 and the redux 3310. Last month, it was reported that HMD Global has rolled out the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for the Nokia 6 in China. It is now reported that HMD Global has rolled out the May Security patch for Nokia 6 users in Hong Kong and Taiwan, which also brings the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update.
This information comes from Nokia Power User which reports that HMD Global has issued a statement announcing the wider rollout of Android 7.1.1 Nougat. HMD Global’s statement reads, “Nokia 6 in Hong Kong and Taiwan received Android 7.1.1 update and also the May security update today. We are delivering our promise to provide monthly security updates and also regular systems updates. China version was updated to 7.1.1 already in April and also received the May security update early this week.”
The Nokia 6 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box and if this report does turn out to be true, then users will be receiving some new features on the latest OS. Android 7.1.1 officially rolled out in December last year. The update brings new features like gender counterparts for emoji that had only male or female representation. Android 7.1.1 Nougat integrates GIFs directly on your keyboard with compatible apps like Google Allo, Google Messenger and Hangouts. This update also allows users to launch actions within an app by long pressing the app.
