HMD Global has announced the first Nokia-branded Android smartphone called Nokia 6. The company s first comeback smartphone with Google s OS is exclusive to China and has been priced at 1,699 CNY, which is approximately Rs 17,000. At the given price, the Nokia 6 offers a decent, albeit slightly less-appealing, set of specifications which would make the battle tougher for the company to stand against tested performers (also loaded with features) such as the Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2, and Coolpad Cool 1 Dual. Although Nokia 6 is restricted to China, we pit it against competing devices to see how well they fare. Price: The Nokia 6 is priced at 1,699 CNY (approximately Rs 17,000), however, it is available only in China through JD.com. The Redmi Note 3 and LeEco Le 2, on the other hand, are priced at Rs 11,999 while the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual is priced at Rs 13,999. Display: The Nokia 6 features a unibody design made from 6000 series aluminum and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080p) display covered with 2.5D curved glass. The Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2 also feature 5.5-inch full HD displays while the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual comes with a 5.5-inch full HD IPS in-cell display.
Processor, RAM, Storage: The Nokia 6 is powered by Qualcomm s 64-bit Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC (eight Cortex A53 cores) clocked at 1.4GHz paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. It comes with expandable storage option.
Redmi Note 3 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, 64-bit hexa-core 1.8GHz processor coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be further be expanded via microSD card.
LeEco Le 2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 652, octa core 1.8 GHz processor paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.
The Coolpad Cool 1 Dual is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 510 GPU and 4GB/3GB of RAM options.
Camera: Nokia 6 comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF along with an 8 megapixel front snapper with f/2.0 aperture for selfies or video calling. The Redmi Note 3 comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera along with a 5-megapixel front snapper. The LeEco Le 2 features a 16-megapixel rear camera with 4K recording capabilities along with an 8-megapixel front shooter.
In the same price category, what sets the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual apart, is that it is one of the affordable smartphones to offer a dual rear-camera setup. It comes with a pair of 13-megapixel cameras featuring f/ 2.0 aperture, Phase-Detection Auto-focus (PDAF), 4K video recording, 720p slo-mo along with dual-tone LED flash. The first sensor is for capturing RGB colors whereas the other sensor captures the monochrome images. For selfies, it further offers an 8-megapixel front snapper.
Battery: The Nokia 6 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery and so is the LeEco Le 2. The Redmi Note 3 houses a 4,050mAh battery while the Coolpad Cool 1 Dual comes with a 4,000mAh battery.
At this price point, what makes the Nokia 6 a damp deal is that it houses a processor that offers battery efficiency but doesn t offer the kind of performance other competing devices offer with advanced processors. Redmi Note 3 comes with Snapdragon 650 SoC (four Cortex A53 cores + two Cortex A72 cores), and LeEco Le 2 with Snapdragon 652 SoC (four Cortex A53 cores + four Cortex A72 cores). Here, the Cortex A53 cores power the device during normal usage, and the Cortex A72 cores kick in when performance boost is needed, like playing graphics intense games. This ensures a balanced experience both in terms of battery life and performance. Given the use of Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC (eight Cortex A53 cores) in the Nokia 6, it is unlikely to provide the real power needed for running graphics hungry games and apps.
