The Nokia 7 Plus brings improvements nifty improvements over the Nokia 7 smartphone that was launched last year.

Earlier this year in February, HMD Global unveiled four smartphones and one feature phone at MWC 2018 in Barcelona. After recently launching the entry-level Nokia 1 with Android 8.0 Oreo Go OS in India, the Finnish company has now launched the Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco in India. The Nokia 7 Plus is priced at Rs 25,999, and it will go on pre-order starting April 20 on Amazon India and select retail outlets. The smartphone will go on sale starting April 30. The Nokia 7 Plus is an upgraded version of last year s Nokia 7, and it brings in some key improvements to the design, along with newer hardware. After spending some time with Nokia 7 Plus at MWC 2018, here are my first impressions. Also Read - Tecno Spark 5 Pro launching on Amazon India tomorrow at 12PM: Price in India, features and more

18:9 full-screen display

While most vendors have already incorporated 18:9 displays on their smartphones, HMD Global has also moved to the full-screen display. The Nokia 7 Plus is the first smartphone from the Finnish company to come with a 6-inch full HD+ 18:9 display. It is an IPS LCD panel and offers good amount of brightness, sharpness and punchy color reproduction.

The front is dominated by the display, with the front camera and earpiece along with sensors sitting above it, and the bottom is clean. The smartphone comes with a metal frame, which is strong and sturdy, and the back has a rubberized matte finish to it.

The USB Type-C port sits at the bottom, the 3.5mm audio jack sits on the top, whereas the power and volume rocker is on the right. The dual SIM card tray is on the left, and it is a hybrid one. On the back, you have dual camera modules with fingerprint sensor sitting below it. Overall, you get an pretty interesting mix of design that users will likely appreciate.

Under the hood, the Nokia 7 Plus is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB expandable storage. Armed with a 3,800mAh battery with fast charging, connectivity option includes dual SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth and GPS.

One of the key changes comes in the form of dual rear cameras. While HMD Global previously opted for an RGB + Monochrome lens combination on the Nokia 8, it has changed the configuration this time around. You now get a 12-megapixel sensor with standard lens of aperture f/1.75, paired with a 12-megapixel sensor with telephoto lens and aperture of f/2.6.

With Carl ZEISS optics, the telephoto lens here helps to capture photos with 2X optical lossless zoom and add DSLR-like bokeh effects to your photos. Up front, you get a 16-megapixel camera of aperture f/2.0 and it also lets you capture photos with bokeh effects. I clicked a few photos at the event, and the quality looked impressive. But as these are production units, we will reserve our judgment till we review the retail units.

Android One Program

When HMD Global entered the smartphone market with Nokia phones, the company promised to offer Pure Android to enable faster software updates. While the company did deliver on its promise, the new smartphones run Android One program with support for Project Treble. Nokia says this will allow them to roll out software updates and security patches even faster.

Watch: Nokia 7 Plus first look

While the Nokia 7 didn t release in India, we do really hope HMD Global brings the Nokia 7 Plus to the Indian shores. From the little time I spent with the device, it looks interesting. If HMD Global can go with an all aggressive pricing, the Nokia 7 Plus can compete with Xiaomi s Redmi Note 5 Pro which boasts similar specifications. HMD Global has confirmed that all the smartphones launched at MWC 2018 will come to India starting April.

Together with the design, cameras and Android One OS, the Nokia 7 Plus seems like an interesting proposition, and we will be waiting for its India launch. Till then, stay tuned.
