The latest version of Android finally has a name: say hello to Android 9 Pie. And while it’s still new, the only devices that are receiving early access to it are the Google Pixel range of smartphones for now. However, according to a new report, it seems that the Nokia 7 Plus is also getting access to the stable version of Android 9 Pie, thus making it the first non-Google smartphone to receive the latest software. The report by Nokia Power User comes in the form of a tip by a reader, showing that a Nokia 7 Plus device is receiving the Android 9 Pie update as an OTA package. We have tried it on our own Nokia 7 Plus which is currently on the Android P Developer Preview path, but have not received the software update yet. Nonetheless, the update brings some of the key new features of Android Pie directly to the phone, including the adaptive battery, simplified navigation, and app and action recommendations. The size of the update package is 1173MB.
The Nokia 7 Plus was one of the few devices to receive official access to the Android P Developer Preview, and thanks to its Android One software, was always expected to be early in the list of smartphones to get the stable build of Android 9 Pie. All of Nokia’s current range of smartphones run on near-stock Android software, with some of the newer ones being officially branded as Android One devices. The lack of manufacturer customizations on an Android One device make it easy for the manufacturer to quickly engineer and push out new software to users.

If the Nokia 7 Plus is indeed already getting the latest version of Android, then the company’s ability to push out software updates fast is truly commendable. We will keep trying with our own Nokia 7 Plus, and update this story if we can confirm that the phone is actually receiving the update.
