The year may be drawing to a close, but HMD Global isn’t done with its 2018 launches yet. The Finnish company, which has holds the exclusive license to market and sell Nokia-branded Android smartphones, has just added another smartphone to its ever-expanding portfolio.
At a launch event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, HMD Global has taken the wraps off of the Nokia 8.1. As expected, it’s the global variant of Nokia X7, which has been available in China for quite some time now. Also called ‘New Nokia 8’, the smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It features a 6.18-inch FullHD+ notched display with a resolution of 1080×2280 pixels and a 19:9 aspect ratio. The ‘PureDisplay’ panel is HDR10-compliant as well. Like most of HMD Global’s smartphones, Nokia 8.1 is an Android One-certified smartphone and runs Android 9.0 Pie out-of-the-box.
For imaging, Nokia 8.1 features a dual-lens camera system at the back, comprised of a 12-megapixel sensor and a 13-megapixel sensor. There’s also a 20-megapixel lens up front for selfies and video calls. Other features include 4K video recording (at 30fps), professional portrait mode, and AI-based scene detection. The smartphone has all standard connectivity features, with a 3,500mAh battery rounding off the spec sheet.
At the launch event, HMD Global said that Nokia 8.1 will be available in selected regions in mid-December, and will be coming to India shortly after that. The smartphone has been given a retail price of 399 Euros, which translates to almost Rs 32,900. However, we’ll have to see how HMD Global prices the Nokia 8.1 when it launches in India, something that could happen as early as next week.
