Earlier this year, HMD Global, the Finnish company that holds the exclusive license to manufacture and market Nokia-branded mobile phones, launched the Nokia 8 in India. The first Nokia-branded Android flagship, Nokia 8 has since been superseded by Nokia 8 Sirocco. Now, even though the 8 has been updated to Android 8.1 Oreo (and is all but confirmed to get Android 9.0 Pie, like all other Android-powered Nokia smartphones launched by HMD Global), it still doesn’t have ‘funky’ features like face unlock.

Frustrated over this, a disgruntled Nokia 8 owner from India lashed out at HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas, lamenting the second-class treatment being meted out to the top-tier smartphone.

Responding to the tweet, Sarvikas assured that there are quite a few updates in line for the Nokia 8, and the upcoming Android 9.0 Pie update will enhance the smartphone’s camera performance even further. He also mentioned that ARCore (Google’s Augmented Reality SDK) support is there, and the company is still evaluating features like facial unlock for all its smartphones.

To recall, Nokia 8 was launched in India in January this year. Powered by Qualcomm’s last-year’s (but still plenty-powerful) Snapdragon 835 SoC, the flagship smartphone comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, with support for microSD cards of up to 256GB. It has a 5.3-inch Quad-HD IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels resolution and a standard 16:9 aspect ratio.

Nokia 8’s USP is its Zeiss-branded dual-camera system, comprised of two 13-megapixel sensors (one RGB and one monochrome). There’s also a 13-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls. The smartphone comes with a ‘Bothie’ feature, which allows photos and videos to be captured simultaneously from both front and rear camera systems.
