HMD Global is expected to launch its next Nokia-branded smartphone at an event in London on August 16. The Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 created quite a buzz, but all eyes are now on the Nokia 8, which is touted to be HMD Global s flagship smartphone. The smartphone s alleged render, specifications and even pricing have been revealed in recent leaks. It has now been spotted on benchmarking website Geekbench with an interesting reveal as this unit runs on Android O, instead of the expected Android 7.0 Nougat. The Geekbench listing shows the Nokia 8 running on Android 8.0.0, which is Android O. It also shows the smartphone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC and 4GB of RAM. Google is yet to officially release Android, the next iteration of its mobile OS. Going by its usual schedule, Android O will possibly be revealed within a month. And the first devices to run Android O will be the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and the Nexus Player. Therefore it seems highly unlikely that the Nokia 8 will run on Android O out-of-the-box. However it does offer another possibility of HMD Global rolling out Android O update shortly after the Nokia 8 launch.
HMD Global had previously assured that it would release software updates regularly, and it has kept its promise so far. In fact, the company also announced that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 will positively receive Android O update after its release. The timeframe wasn t detailed, but it could happen this year itself. ALSO READ: Nokia 8 photos hint at dual-cameras, copper gold color variant
According to recent leaks, the Nokia 8 is expected to feature either a 5.3-inch or 5.7-inch display with full HD (1080p) resolution. In terms of memory, the smartphone could launch with 4GB of RAM or 6GB of RAM accompanied with 64GB of internal storage. In the photography department, the smartphone is highly expected to feature a Carl Zeiss-branded dual-camera setup at the back. HMD Global s recent partnership with Carl Zeiss is expected to see its first fruit in the Nokia 8. The smartphone could come with USB Type-C port, and a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button. ALSO READ: Nokia 8 price leaked ahead of the official launch
