HMD Global, the Finnish licensee of Nokia mobile brand, may have silently discontinued its flagship smartphone, the Nokia 8 Sirocco. The smartphone was launched at Mobile World Congress 2018 in February and carried a retail price of €750. In India, it was made available with a price that was north of Rs 50,000, making it the most premium device yet from the company.
Since its launch, the smartphone has seen significant drop in its retail price and was recently available for as low as Rs 36,999 in India. However, it is not available for purchase on any of the retail platforms. If you visit any of the regional site of Nokia.com and click on “Buy Now” then you will only be redirected back to the homepage of the company.
In the case of Indian site of Nokia phones, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is listed for a price of Rs 36,999, which is lower than the Rs 49,999 list price of the smartphone on Flipkart. However, when you click on the buy button, it leads to a webpage that allows you to complete the transaction but does not officially let you purchase the device. It actually returns a message that the smartphone is “currently not available”.
This only suggests that the company has discontinued the sales of Nokia 8 Sirocco, at least it seems likely in the western markets. There is a possibility that HMD Global is preparing for the launch of Nokia 8.1, which could be the successor to Nokia 8 Sirocco. The Nokia 8.1 is tipped to come with a Snapdragon 710 SoC, making it another premium mid-range device. HMD Global’s real flagship device will be the Nokia 9 Pureview powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC, which could be unveiled at MWC next year.
