The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with a premium design with curved edges, dual rear cameras and Android 8.1 Oreo-based Android One OS.

After unveiling the smartphone at MWC 2018 in February this year, HMD Global has now launched the Nokia 8 Sirocco in India. It is the most premium smartphone from the Finnish company till date. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is priced at Rs 49,999, and will compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S9, LG V30+ and OnePlus 5T to name a few.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco will go on pre-order starting April 20, and will go on sale via Flipkart and other select mobile outlets starting April 30. I had a chance to play around with the Nokia 8 Sirocco at MWC, and after spending a few minutes with the smartphone, here are my first impressions.

Curved edge design that oozes premiumness

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is gorgeous, and it is all about style and aesthetics. No doubt, it is a looker with its front and back glass design. The 6-inch full HD+ display with 16:9 aspect ratio is curved on both sides, just like Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 smartphones. The glass has a smooth and glossy finish to it. And while holding the Nokia 8 Sirocco feels premium, the glass panel not only makes it slippery, but also attracts a lot of smudges. Just like all other smartphones with glass panels, you’ll find yourself often cleaning the glass to maintain its look.

Dual cameras with ZEISS lens

At the back, you get dual camera setup with Carl ZEISS optics. Out of the two cameras, one is a 12-megapixel f/1.75 aperture standard lens with optical image stabilization, whereas the other is a 13-megapixel f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens. Together, both cameras let you capture photos with 2X optical lossless zoom, and live bokeh mode to add DSLR-like background defocus is also available.

I clicked a couple of photos at the event, and the quality looked interesting. However, we will reserve our judgment until we review the smartphone. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.

Top notch hardware, but

The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with top-of-the-line hardware, but while other vendors are gearing up to launch Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC powered devices, the smartphone is powered by last year’s Snapdragon 835 SoC. Yes, it is one of the best top-tier chipsets from last year, but two months into 2018, you would expect the smartphone to be powered by the latest chipset. The chipset is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage. A microSD card slot for further expansion is also present.

RIP 3.5mm audio jack

Yes, HMD Global has taken the first step towards a bold future. It has removed the legacy 3.5mm headphone from the Nokia 8 Sirocco. You will have to rely on Bluetooth or USB Type-C based headphones to listen to your favorite music or watch videos.

Other features

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance, allowing you to submerge the smartphone under one-meter water for up to 30 minutes. With connectivity options such as Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and GPS, the smartphone is armed with a 3,260mAh battery with support for fast charging and wireless fast charging. Being a part of Google’s Android One initiative, the Nokia 8 Sirocco runs stock Android Oreo out-of-the-box.

Overall, the design and build quality of the Nokia 8 Sirocco is impressive. The camera too looked pretty interesting, and we can’t wait to test it out. We will review the camera and other interesting features of the Nokia 8 Sirocco. Till then, stay tuned.
