Nokia 8: Watch the smartphone with 'bendgate' material put through durability tests

The results are assuring.

Brand Nokia is remembered for the sturdy and near-invincible phones it once made. In 2017, the brand re-entered the mobile industry with its set of Android-powered smartphones. HMD Global, the company behind resurrecting the Nokia brand, recently launched the Nokia 8, and soon after we have YouTuber JerryRigEverything trying his hands at, quite literally, ripping apart the phone to test its durability. The results are assuring.

Soon after unwrapping the Nokia 8, the phone’s display is put to the scratching test, and it is only on level 6 that the display starts showing signs of damage. Nokia 8 features a 5.3-inch quad HD (2560×1440 pixels) IPS 2K resolution display with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The testing continues on the home button, front camera, back camera module, and all are unscathed. The antenna bands, being plastic, fall prey to the razor blade attack. Next, the phone’s back is scratched with keys and thankfully, the attack leaves no marks behind. However, using a razor blade leaves ugly marks on the phone. ALSO READ: This is what it takes to destroy the new Nokia 3310

The talking point of the Nokia 8 is that it has been crafted from 6000-series aluminum. This gives the phone the desired strength and resistance against damage. It is also worth noting that the ‘bendgate-affected‘ Apple iPhone 6 Plus also uses same type of aluminum. Reportedly, the iPhone 6 Plus is so fragile that it bent even when kept in trouser pockets. However, the Nokia 8 passes the bend test with flying color.

The phone does not budge when high pressure is applied. As HMD Global’s CPO, Juho Sarvikas explains, it is due to the use of full aluminum body and not just a ring, which adds to the durability. ALSO READ: Nokia 3310: 10 crazy things people did with the indestructible feature phone from 2000s

Next, the display and the back panel are put to a burn test, and unless you deliberately go about putting the phone on fire, the display is tough. The Nokia logo on the rear panel, however, could come off over time. On the whole, despite using ‘bendgate prone’ material, the Nokia 8 is one sturdy device that is unlikely to bend, burn, or wear off easily. DON’T MISS: Nokia 8 first impressions: Comeback of the flagship brand with a flagship phone
