So the “new age Communicator” is officially available in India. After making the handset available for pre-booking for early adopters (who might well be tempted to wait, seeing what happened to Samung and the Galaxy Tab, but THAT is another story), Nokia today launched the E7. The phone was launched by Indian film star Shah Rukh Khan, who has been known to be a Nokia user (he said he still has his 1996 Communicator with him). Rather interestingly, he said that he had been approached by Nokia “as a tester” of the device and had been using it for a month. Film stars as tech testers? Well, we don’t quite know what to say, but Shah Rukh clearly did – he was delighted with the device. Also Read - Nokia T10 tablet spotted on Amazon for Rs 11,999 ahead of any announcement

We have talked of its specs and its pros and cons before, but in case you missed it, here’s a brief overview: it belongs to the legendary Communicator series, has a 4.0 inch AMOLED touchscreen display, a slide out full QWERTY keyboard, runs on Symbian ^3, has a 8.0 MP fixed focus camera capable of recording HD video, and comes with a bevvy of connectivity options including USB on the go and an HDMI port. What we had not known for sure was the price and today that was revealed too – Rs 29,999 is the best buy price of the device, with users also having the option to cough out in three zero-interest monthly instalments. There is also a bonus for Vodafone subscribers who buy the E7 – they can get 2GB of data downloads per month free for six months. Nokia also claims to have introduced over 10,000 pieces of locally relevant content on the Ovi Store, optimized for the Nokia E7, including three business channels in a Web TV format – CNBC TV18, CNBC Awaaz and Bloomberg – that E7 consumers can download free of cost from the Ovi Store. There are also a stack of applications pre-loaded on the device including  Mail for Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Quick office Dynamic Premium, Vlingo, Adobe PDF reader, World traveler App, F-Secure anti-theft software for mobile and Nokia Ovi Maps with free GPS navigation. All of which is most impressive, but will it be enough to make the E7 the runaway hit that Nokia needs. Time will tell.
