Nokia Lumia 630 vs Nokia Lumia 625: What’s different?

nokia-lumia-630-vs-nokia-lumia-625Last night Nokia took the stage at the BUILD 2014 conference to unveil a host of new devices including the Lumia 630. The new device is a slightly better version of the Lumia 625 and with the company expected to launch the device sometime next month, let s see just how much better it is compared to its predecessor. Compared to the 4.7-inch on the Lumia 625, the Lumia 630 has a slightly smaller 4.5-inch display. But the latter has a better resolution (FWVGA compared to WVGA) in a smaller sized display which also translates into a better pixel density (218ppi compared to 199ppi). The difference is only marginal and is not something you will notice in daily use.

This is the one department where the Lumia 630 trumps its predecessor. With a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, you can expect better performance in certain situations when compared to the dual-core Snapdragon S4 SoC on the Lumia 625. However, the mere presence of twice the number of cores doesn’t always mean twice the performance. The Lumia 625 uses Krait cores, which have been fine tuned to boost their performance and battery consumption. (You can check this video out for more details.) The RAM on both the devices is the same 512MB.

On the storage front, both the devices feature 8GB of internal storage that can be expanded using a microSD card. Where the storage on the Lumia 625 can be expanded up to 64GB, the storage on the successor can be expanded to double of that.

This is where Nokia s choices have surprised us a bit. While both the devices feature 5-megapixel cameras at the back, Nokia has decided to leave out the VGA front camera found on the Lumia 625. What s more, the company has also removed the flash and the dedicated camera button on the Lumia 630. The Lumia 625 then is winning this round.

As far as the battery is concerned, the 2,000mAh unit on the Lumia 625 has been scaled down to 1,830mAh on the Lumia 630. On the plus side though, the Battery Power Sense feature that comes with Windows Phone 8.1 lets you manage your battery s performance. However, even the Lumia 625 will get the feature eventually when Nokia releases the Lumia Cyan update.

While the Lumia 630 runs on WP 8.1 out of the box, Nokia also announced that existing Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices will soon be able to update their phones via an OTA update codenamed Lumia Cyan . The update brings in a host of new features that include Cortana, an Action Center, an improved calendar and Start Screen enhancements among other features. Also included will be a SensorCore low-power motion sensor for fitness apps like Bing Health. This round then is a tie.

It is a very close call between the Lumia 630 and Lumia 625. The Lumia 630 comes with dual-SIM and runs Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box, but it does not have a front-facing camera and the flash for the rear camera has also been removed. Apart from having Windows 8.1 out of the box and dual-SIM, we don’t see any groundbreaking improvement in the Lumia 630 over the Lumia 625.
