The Finnish technology giant Nokia has just teased a new product lineup it promises to announce today. The tweet shows a black box that appears to be a set-top box and has a striking resemblance with Apple TV. Regardless of whether the product is a box, or comes in that teased box, Nokia is getting back to the hardware business for the first time after selling many parts of the company in a multi-billion dollar deal with Microsoft. While the company hasn’t revealed the exact product’s name, it does hint that it is a new product lineup. Given Nokia’s strong network portfolio, it won’t be surprising if it indeed is a TV accessory. At an analyst meeting last week, Nokia’s recently appointed CEO Rajeev Suri announced that the company plans to use its network advancements and mobile patents to serve people. He also squashed the rumors from earlier this month which claimed that the company was working on its return to the mobile handset business.
Suri also hinted at the possibilities that Nokia could license its patents to mid- and low-tier smartphone manufacturers after Q4, 2016. So one thing is for sure, there isn’t a phone in that box. We’ll know more tomorrow when the company officially takes the wraps off it.
