Nokia X could make a comeback under HMD Global on April 27

The original Nokia X was launched back in 2014 and was Nokia's first Android device, although it didn't really feel that way.

HMD Global is said to be launching a new smartphone on April 27 at an event in China, and the latest reports are that the phone will be a reimagined version of the Nokia X. The original Nokia X was launched back in 2014 when Nokia was owned by Microsoft and had most of its devices running on the Windows Phone platform. The Nokia X of 2014 was the first Nokia-branded smartphone to be powered by Android OS, and the only device from the company to run Google’s operating system till the brand was licensed out to HMD Global.

The original Nokia X ran on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, but featured a heavy skin on top that was designed to resemble Windows Phone OS and effectively remove any trace of Android resemblance. The phone did not feature the Google Play Store, which meant that you could not freely install apps on the phone, which was then considered the biggest advantage that Android had over Windows Phone.

However, the phone featured a proprietary app store with apps that were confirmed to work smoothly on the phone, and you could optionally sideload any apps onto the device if you had the APK files. The phone was a budget device, and was powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Play chipset with 512MB of RAM and 4GB storage. Even for the time, these specifications were budget-grade at best.

The new Nokia X hasn’t been seen in full glory just yet, but GizmoChina has reported that some people have spotted a digital hoarding in a mall that features an ad for the upcoming phone. The ad on the digital sign is partly in English and partly in Chinese script, and mentions that the phone called Nokia X will be launched on April 27. The advertisement also shows two phones crossing each other to form the letter ‘X’, showing off the silhouette of the new phone.

From the look of the phone, it would appear that the new Nokia X will be a compact budget device, just like its predecessor. But since we can’t see the phone too clearly, we could well be wrong in our guess. We’ll find out soon enough though, since the April 27 launch date is just a few days away.
